Halloween Costumes

October 31st / Halloween

Our staff is keen to expand our tradition of wearing Black and Orange to celebrate Halloween, including costumes this year. Students are welcome to participate by wearing orange and black if they choose to save their costume for Halloween night.  As we make this change we ask families to consider the following guidelines should your child wear a costume to school on October 31st.

  • Students must be identifiable and visible to ensure safety.
  • Masks are not permitted. Face makeup is permitted provided the student is still identifiable.
  • Scary clowns are not permitted.
  • Costumes that depict violence, alcohol, or drugs are not appropriate.
  • Fake weapons are not permitted.
  • Costumes should not hinder a student’s ability to travel through the school and outdoor space safely. (think PE class, recess😊)
  • Props (like wands, costume accessories) often get misplaced are best left at home

Please remember that costumes, even with good intent, may make others feel scared, upset, insulted, or humiliated. Below are two guiding questions that may help determine the appropriateness of costumes for school:

  • Does the costume depict or perpetuate a stereotype or stigma associated with a particular race, culture, religion, or gender?
  • Would the costume choice be considered offensive to a particular race, ethnicity, religion, or gender?

Let’s work together to create a safe and enjoyable environment for all students.
