Community Programs

At George Jay Elementary School we offer a wide variety of programs designed to enhance a child’s learning ability. We also provide resources for children and families in need of extra support.

Here are some of our programs:

Early Learning

STRONGSTART – A pre-school program for parents and kids. Free of charge 8:45-11:45, provided by the Ministry of Education

Community Programs

FAMILY LIASON PROGRAM – Family Liaison worker, Leila Durzi, offers a wide variety of support services to parents and families including: crisis intervention, referral and advocacy with community agencies, housing support, in school mentorship program, holiday hamper program and other essential services
PARENT RESOURCE ROOM – A parent room for parents to socialize, get information and resources, participate in the Parent Advisory Council, use the clothing exchange; have a cup of coffee or tea; enjoy monthly potlucks, use internet computers etc. This room also has a play area for children but they must be accompanied by an adult.
BREAD PROGRAM – Provides free bread every Thursday morning. Bread is donated by Cob’s and is only possible through parent participation.
GOOD FOOD BOX – Provides fresh fruit and veggies at a reasonable cost once a month.
YOUTH AND FAMILY COUNSELLOR – Provides both group and individual counseling with parental consent, parenting workshops as well as referrals to community agencies.

BREAKFAST TO BEETHOVEN – A hot breakfast provided to George Jay students

LUNCH PROGRAM – Provides lunch to students every day. Cost is based on what families can afford.
FRUIT AND SNACK PROGRAM – Provides all students with a fruit or vegetable snack bi-weekly throughout the year.
IN-SCHOOL MENTOR PROGRAM – Students are matched with mentors who are screened and orientated through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Victoria. This is a very successful and beneficial program that offers a special one-to-one friendship with a volunteer mentor. This program is designed to help increase a student’s self esteem, resiliency, and healthy attitudes and connection to school.
HAPPY, HEALTHY KIDS PROGRAM – This is a privately funded hygiene program for students of George Jay Elementary, which provides hygiene supplies free of charge once a month. The program targets primary students (K-3) but is available to all students upon request.
